SATURDAY JUNE 29, 2013: “A good name is better than fine perfume and the day of death better than the day of birth” (Ecclesiastes 7:1) A Special Prayer for President Nelson Mandela! Dear father God. You had Tata Madiba born on July 18, 1918 without any royal fanfare, without an inkling of an indication of the giant you would make him. Mveso, his place of birth in the Transkei, was as aloof as he was in his early years, but God, you had a verse written in the Bible especially for him: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future….” (Jeremiah 29:11) And Lord you honored your Word to him. You took him along a great detour, barefoot on a perilous road strewn with thorny rose-bushes, stripped of the petals, denied its perfume. Lord…, you allowed the Apartheid-Snake to incarcerate him in a Devil’s castle, surrounded by a moat teeming with the brainchildren of an institution of evil that idolized the outward appearance of man, instead of the heart, like you do. Lord…, you allowed the adversary to rob him of 27 years and his children and grandchildren of a special father and a Tata. But Lord…, you had a Plan for him. You placed him in a special niche in your heart. You made him a beacon of light behind the seclusion of Robin Island. You let the name Nelson Mandela become a handle on to which people from all walks of life in South Africa and the rest of the world could latch on to and unite against the Monster. When the time came for his eventual release, the enemy feared retribution, but instead they received a pardon. When the whole world held its breath in fear of a racial war that would break out at the end of a ‘Long Walk to Freedom’, you played your Trump Card: a Reconciliatory Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. Lord, we thank you for giving our Tata a name that is better than fine perfume. You say the day of death is better than the day of birth, but you also say in your word immediately following our Tata’s verse: “Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart, I will be found by you.” Declares the Lord… (verses 12, 13) Now Lord, our big Tata is desperately ill. I believe that everybody who holds Tata Mandela close to heart is really seeking your face and your favor for him. Lord, we know the people say time had run its course for our Tata, but we know Lord, time is in your Hands. We know Lord that you can be four days late, then you are still on time! Please Lord, listen to our prayer. Touch that persistent lung ailment with your Divine Hand, medicate his whole body soul and spirit and rejuvenate him. Lift him in good spirits from that sick-bed and reimburse him the rest of those 27 stolen years, just because Lord, you are the Greatest. Amen.
