SAY NO TO DOWRY!!! A woman is killed over dowry every hour in India. That is official statistics, just imagine what the real number is? Roughly 8,233 women died violent deaths in 2013 alone because their families were unable to meet demands for more dowry, official figures from Indias National Crime Records Bureau reveals. Dowry is illegal in India since 1961, but it is still a widely accepted practice amongst Indians. Majority of marriages are arranged by parents. There is some form of dowry in all of them. Cases of cruelty committed by husbands and their relatives increased significantly from 99,135 to 106,527. Many of the cruelty cases are believed to be dowry-realted and many dowry killings are preceded by cruelty by the husband and In Laws. Although the payment of dowries is illegal, they remain widespread across caste, class and educational divides. In recent ears demands have become more insistent and expensive... NOTE: According to the Bureaus latest figures, charges were brought in 94 percent of the 8,233 dowry death cases, but the conviction rate was just 32 percent.
