SCAM ALERT...Residents have been reporting an increase of emails from various companies claiming their credit report has been affected by recent breaches at area stores such as Home Depot and Target. These emails want you to click on a link, and confirm or enter some identifying info to view the changes to your credit report. You should never provide personal information in response to emails from unknown sources. If you believe these emails to be authentic, you should still not click on the link in the email. Instead, request a FREE copy of your credit report using the only official government site, AnnualCreditReport Also, with the holiday season approaching, please be careful when responding to emails that appear to be from legitimate retailers or shipping companies. Often times criminals will send out emails posing as shipping companies or retailers during the holiday season hoping you will confuse the email with an authentic email from a company you have done business with. The suspicious emails will either have attachments or links in them that either install viruses or attempt to steal your personal info. Shipping companies/retailers will not send you email attachments and you should not open any attachments unless the actual sender is known to you and you know what the attachment contains. You should also not click on any links in emails that may be suspicious. Instead, type the retailers web address manually into your browser to prevent being misdirected by a fraudulent link.
