SCIENCE LESSON # 1: Matter exists in three states: gas, liquid, and solid. Most matter consists of a mixture of substances. Mixtures can be either homogeneous or heterogeneous; homogeneous mixtures are called solutions. Mixtures can be resolved into two types of pure substances: compounds and elements. Each substance has a unique set of chemical and physical properties that can be used to identify it.
