SCUBA diving training inaugurated PORT BLAIR, DEC 14 / - / A five- day PADI open water SCUBA diving training program was inaugurated in the Andaman and Nicobar Centre for Ocean Science and Technology (ANCOST), Earth Science System Organisation (ESSO)-National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), Dollygunj Port Blair at 2.00 pm on Dec 15, 2014. Speaking as chief guest, the Director, Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (CIARI), Dr. S. Dam Roy in his address said that it is very important for the young scientists to get trained in SCUBA diving so that they can interact directly with the underwater ecosystem and provide original information and transform research results for the public use. He added that the training is a very important opportunity to learn the ‘art of diving’ to study the organisms in situ, without harming the organisms. Earlier, the Officer-In-Charge, ANCOST-NIOT, Dr. N.V. Vinithkumar welcomed the gathering. The Group Head, Dr. R. Kirubagaran, Ocean Science and Technology for Islands (ESSO-NIOT), Chennai in his presidential address said that this is the 6th time NIOT is conducting the training programme in Port Blair itself and is a rare opportunity for the scientists to get trained in SCUBA diving at Andaman from a PADI trained dive instructor, who is also a scientist at NIOT. He advised the participants to learn various levels and reach dive instructor to teach others. Dr. G. Dharani PADI certified dive instructor has provided the overview about the training and thanked the ESSO-NIOT and the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, for organizing the training programme. The function was attended by the Heads and Scientists of various scientific research Institutions like Central Island Agricultural Research Institute, Indian Council of Medical Research, Department of Marine Biology, Department of Disaster Management, Pondicherry University, Zoological Survey of India, Botanical Survey of India, Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Aquaculture, etc. The program aims to promote safe, effective scientific diving through diver training and education programmes and will conclude on 20th Dec 2014.
