SEARCH FOR A SERVANT-LEADER BY DR. INYA IBI EGBE Cross River State Coordinator, Nigeria Prays Who is a servant-leader? Such is a ruler with a heart of humility and compassion which is full of humane acts towards his subjects; yet possessing a colossal mind of an abbot, filled with creative and innovative ideas that are geared towards improving his people and his country. Having stood at the sidelines over the years, watching with keen interest the different players in Nigerian field of politics, as an experienced linesman, it becomes imperative for me to draw the attention of the center-referee to some observed flaws which are not in keeping with the definition of a servant-leader. To this end, I had to pay visit to three nations, as it were to observe their criteria for choosing their leaders. The first nation-state was the fish kingdom. There was a lot of tension in the kingdom who should sit at that enviable palace. Two candidates came forth very powerfully. The society decided to give them a test. They stated their criteria very explicitly: “the candidate who shall be our servant-king is the one who shall be able to swim to the very centre of the ocean and dive into its very depths to discover and bring to us that golden stone which will help us as citizens to grow and develop ourselves and our kingdom, evenly.” It was observed that one of them had well-developed fins whereas the other did not. As they had started off, the one with the developed fins had speed and balance against the swift waves. Before they could blink their eyes, he had passed their test, bringing along with him that Golden Fleece to a clapping ovation. But the big-mouthed opponent could not go far with his undeveloped fins. The citizens unanimously elected the active performer to become their servant-leader. Their wise choice was proved right throughout its reign. After this, I proceeded, so to speak, to the kingdom of the birds. Here the two opposing candidates vying for the kingship were on the throat of each other. To calm their nerves and the impasse, the kingdom-citizens also presented them with the determining challenge. They told them that there was a Diamond stone, which is believed, if brought into their kingdom, would help them attain a balanced civilization where all citizenry should be treated on the basis of merit instead of nepotism and ethnicity. But, that treasure was hidden in the tallest oak tree in the heart of their kingdom. Therefore, either of them that could fetch it, the kingdom would become its own. The rat race started. Not long, one of them discovered on its upward surge, that its wings were too weak to withstand the gales. Though its wings made the loudest noise, yet they were not strong enough to attain the height and obtain that glorious treasure. His opponent’s wings were indeed so strong and powerful on its upward, steady course that finally it reached the exact spot. With its sharp discerning eyes, it was able to discover and obtain that Diamond stone of excellence with its innate ability to help actualize the kingdom’s Millennium Goals. When it flew back, there was spontaneous jubilation, resulting in its winning the votes of the masses. It beautifully delivered the long expected democratic dividends and brought happiness and prosperity to all in the bird kingdom. Lastly, I visited the human kingdom. Here, the situation was much more tense than all that I have ever seen. All kinds of evil means, tricks and foul language were displayed by the contestants. As usual, the patriots sought for a more convincing way to decipher their right leader. The only option available was for the two principal candidates to be put into the boxing ring. As they commenced, it was observed that one of the opponent’s hand was dislocated and as such could not naturally perform. On the other hand, his counterpart was in top shape. Indeed, before they could even reach the third round, he gave his opponent a technical knockout. After he had recovered, his supporters encouraged him not to accept defeat. They now arranged for a wrestling match this time around. But little did they know that his legs were just artificial. His rivalry has his God-given legs strongly and firmly planted on the ground. When the contest began, he went straight to those artificial legs and simply disconnected them from his body. His amputee-opponent became too incompetent in the ring. Consequently, the stage was now totally free for the most qualified candidate, the servant-leader, to be voted into power. If one literally evaluates the activities of other presidential candidates in the light of the afore-mentioned illustrations, one may easily discern them to fall into categories of being immature, presumptuous, pompous, or wicked dreamers. They are all like putting a round peg into a square hole. Beyond all these, this author wishes to inform both President Jonathan’s friends and foes about a divine agenda which has been helping to guide and shape Jonathan’s political destiny, unknown to him and others. Frankly speaking, 20 years ago, precisely in 1994, two prophetic revelations to the effect that the civilian president would share the same background with the masses and would come from a minority bloc were put in place. These were published as part of a book titled: The Climax of History--Revivals and the Nations in 1994. Their detailed analyses have been put in a more recent book, titled: DR. GOODLUCK EBELE JONATHAN A GOD-SENT LEADER. These two fulfilled prophecies in the life His Excellency have conferred on him the prophetic powerful “fins of a fish,” which have helped him to dive into the depths of our national archives to resuscitate some long abandoned projects and successfully executing them. Also, that same book brings to the open the humane, noble character of tolerance and compassion in the life of President Jonathan, which any society would look for, from its servant-leader. He has also demonstrated the ability to keep to one’s electoral promises to everyone’s amazement. This has no doubt put the “wings of an eagle” upon Dr. Jonathan to go against the storms of all international criticisms. He has helped Nigeria as a Nation and Nigerian citizens to recover their lost glory and dignity. This has given the leverage for his name to be inscribed in the annals of Nigeria’s History. With his purpose-driven passion, it is clear that despite endless unmerited media criticisms, Jonathan’s liver has been able to deliver on principles. His two strong hands have helped him to achieve most of his set goals. In a similar vein, his two able hands are indeed working so hard to place our dear Nation among the 20 most developed countries in 20:20:20. In fact, as “a fish” with healthy fins, he is helping Nigerians to realize their dream of steady water supply and electricity. As a bird with two strong wings, he has improved our Airports tremendously. He is also carrying our future leaders---the youths—along the pathway of good success through good initiative programmes of his – like the “You Win” project. With his penetrating sharp-eyes, fore-saw Nigeria becoming stronger and more progressive after the National Dialogue/Conference. Thanks to his large wings, Nigeria is drawing such a tremendous attention from the global village, as seen in winning votes of 186 out of 193 countries to have a non-permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council. His two strong legs of stable governance are attracting big foreign investors into the country. With his two sharp-eyed foresight of bequeathing to posterity an enviable Nigeria at the end of his tenure 2019, he should be voted back into office in 2015 by a massive majority. Therefore, my fellow Nigerian citizens, the divine backing of his candidacy should fill him with confidence. And any person, or a group of persons working against this man called President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan from taking the centre-stage in the 2015 presidential election, is in fact, kicking against the pricks. THEREFORE, VOTE FOR THIS SERVANT-LEADER, DR. GOODLUCK EBELE JONATHAN FOR PRESIDENT!
