SEDIBELO FEST ACTIVITIES 2013 Day One: The King’s Concert The King’s Concert comprises of carefully selected performing artists from Kgatleng District and outside the district. The concert is the first event of Sedibelo Fest and comes a day before the Official Opening of the Festival. The aim of the event is to provide an alternative entertainment to residents of Mochudi. Day Two: The Official Opening Ceremony The Official Opening of Sedibelo Fest will be held on August 31. While it will officially mark the beginning of Sedibelo Fest 2013, the event is also significant in that it will show the cultural diversity of Kgatleng District. Performances and exhibitions are expected from all communities resident in the district including Baherero of Pilane and Matebele of Matebeleng as well as Bakgatla ba Kgafela. The event will also feature Heroes Awards dedicated to people and organizations who have had contribution in the development of Kgatleng District in the past. Day Three: Dikopelo Festival Day three of the Sedibelo Fest 2013 is reserved for Dikopelo Festival. Dikopelo indigenous folk music is associated with Bakgatla ba Kgafela and together with dikoma, have come to be widely accepted as trademarks for the community. It is for this reason that the music genre has been drafted into the programming of the Festival. The event will start in the morning and end late in the afternoon. Day Four: Exhibition Opening The Visual Arts Exhibition has been part of Sedibelo Fest since the inception of the festival in 2010. The exhibition provides the visual artists with an opportunity to showcase how they see the world through their art. Day four of the festival marks the official opening of the exhibition which, unlike the Festival, will be showcased for the entire month of September. Day Five: Educational Programmes 1 Students, particularly primary and secondary school students, have a special bond with Sedibelo Fest. As a centre of education and a cultural depository facility, Phuthadikobo Museum recognizes the participation of the students as a way of impart cultural education with them. Elderly members of the community – referred to as Living Human Treasures – are expected to give lectures to students on different life topics. This event is strategic in that it is tied in with Kgatleng District Intangible Cultural Heritage committee’s goal of documenting and inventorying cultural practices. Day Six: Traditional Games The youth are also recognized and urged to participate in the activities of Sedibelo Fest. Day six is dedicated to the youth through their groups. Over the past years, Phuthadikobo Museum has been engaged in traditional games with schools in Kgatleng and Gaborone. This year, out of school youth groups will lock horns in traditional games competition as a strategy to transmit knowledge and skill on cultural practices. Day Seven: Educational Programmes 2 The second part of the educational programmes entails debates between secondary school students conducted in Setswana. The popular event was first conducted in the year 2010 and became a hit with the audience of Sedibelo Fest. Secondary schools will be invited to selected Setswana debaters to tackle topics that would have been created before the event. The aim of this event is to encourage young citizens to research and create conversations using Setswana as compared to English. Day Eight: Day eight is reserved for charity activities which are community based. At this point, no activities have been identified. These are activities are meant to plough back into the community some skills that could be useful long after the festival. Day Nine: Football Tournament Day nine of the festival is dedicated to a football tournament that features Mochudi Centre Chiefs as part of their social responsibility towards the community. In the past, a Kgatleng Select team was chosen to play against Mochudi Centre Chiefs. This year, efforts will be made to include another be Mobile Premiership to play against the Kgatleng giants. The tournament will also feature councilors, gospel word preachers (Baruti) and Dikgosi. Day Ten: Official Closing Ceremony Day ten of Sedibelo Fest marks the official ending of the festival. The closing ceremony will be held on September 8. The closing ceremony includes church service by churches from around the district and conducted by Kgatleng District Minister’s Fraternal. The ceremony also includes Youth Awards, which recognizes the best performing youth groups in the Traditional Games Competition Setswana Debate
