VANGUARDS REPORT The deceased emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, was yesterday laid to rest at the popular Gidan Nasarawa in Kano Municipal, amidst much grief and emotion. Several thousands of sympathisers, who escorted the emir’s corpse from the traditional Kofar Kudu through to Kofar Nasarawa before his final interment, were visibly grief-stricken as they repeatedly prayed for the repose of his soul. Our correspondents reported that the Kano municipal area literally stood still as people came out in their numbers to escort the emir’s corpse on its final journey to the great beyond. The emir’s corpse was conveyed in a white ambulance bearing the inscription of Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano and arrived the venue of the burial at about 5:40pm. He was finally interred at about 6:10pm. Among dignitaries that graced the late emir’s final interment were the Sultan of Sokoto Sa’ad Abubakar, speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, emirs and chiefs and scores of renowned Islamic scholars, including Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, who offered prayers at his graveside. In an obvious demonstration of love for the deceased emir, hundreds of thousands of sympathisers attended the funeral prayer, which was held amidst tight security. Sympathisers included women in purdah, who lined the streets of Kofar Nassarawa, Kofar Mata and all roads leading to the Kofar Kudu gate of the emir’s palace, enroute to Gidan Sarki of Nassarawa, where he was laid to rest at exactly 6.13pm. As was expected, business activities in the area were ground to a halt, as people converged on the palace to catch a glimpse of the corpse and pay their last respects. A number of people paid tribute, extolling the late emir’s leadership virtues, with many describing his death as a colossal loss to the North and the nation in general. Reacting to the demise of the emir, a Kano-based Islamic scholar, Sheikh Tijjani Bala Kalarawi said he was an epitome of wisdom and insisted that the people of Kano would definitely miss his generosity and love for the poor. Sheikh Kalarawi described the late Emir Bayero as “fearless and he was someone who abhorred materialism. He kept to time and was an embodiment of all the good virtues one could ever think of. “His death is a big lesson to the entire people of Kano State, including his children and all those who wish to succeed him,” Sheikh Kalarawi said, as he urged Muslims to pray God to forgive the late emir his shortcomings. Also reacting to the demise of the late emir, a retired assistant inspector general of police, AIG Bashir Albasu said his death marked the end of an era. Albasu, who holds the traditional title of Katukan Kano, said the deceased emir “loved and admired justice and made sure all his subjects enjoyed justice.” A national loss, says Jonathan PRESIDENT GOODLUCK JONATHAN said yesterday that he received news of the death of the Emir of Kano Alhaji Ado Bayero with immense sadness and a deep feeling of great national loss. A statement by presidential spokesman, Dr. Reuben Abati, noted that Jonathan expressed belief that the late royal father would be remembered and honoured by the people of Kano and all Nigerians, for his immense wisdom and competence as a traditional ruler, as well as for using his exalted throne to build bridges of unity, friendship and harmony across the nation. Abati stated, “On behalf of himself, his family, the Federal Government and the people of Nigeria, President Jonathan commiserates with the Emir’s family and all the people of Kano over whom the departed Emir presided illustriously as traditional ruler for more than half a century. SENATE PRESIDENT, SENATOR DAVID MARK says Nigeria has lost a great asset President of the Senate, Senator David Mark has described the demise of the emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, as a big blow and a monumental loss to the nation. Senator Mark noted that the late first class monarch was a great asset who would be missed by all in many respects. Reacting to the demise of the foremost monarch, Senator Mark lamented that Alhaji Bayero departed at a time when his wise counsel was needed to navigate the nation through trying times. “He was a peace maker. He made Kano home for all. He was accommodating. He preached love, unity and good neighbourliness. He was a detribalised leader who made the nation his constituency,” Mark said. AMINU WAZIRI TAMBUWAL,has joined other Nigerians to mourn the death of the late emir of Kano, Dr Ado Bayero, describing it as a monumental loss to the entire country. Saying he received the news of his passing with a great sense of sadness, Tambuwal noted, in a statement issued by his special adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Malam Imam Imam, that the deceased was a strict disciplinarian who led an exemplary life characterised by honesty, fairness, generosity and service to God and humanity. “Under his long and glorious reign, Kano witnessed unprecedented boom in all spheres of human endeavour. Its eminent status as a trading point and centre of commerce in sub Saharan Africa was not only reaffirmed, but enhanced,” the speaker said. RIVERS STATE GOVERNOR, CHIBUIKE ROTIMI AMEACHI, mourns the late Bayero Rivers State governor and chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi, has described the death of the emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, as sad and a huge loss to the nation. In a statement by his chief press secretary, Mr. David Iyofor, Amaechi said the emir’s death was a big blow to the traditional/cultural institution in the country. The governor said, “Nigeria has lost a reputable icon, an excellent traditional ruler, and one of the most revered.” He commiserated with the emir’s family and the government and people of Kano State over the death of the monarch. BABATUNDE RAJI FASHOLA, has commiserated with the government and people of Kano State and all Nigerians on the death of the emir of Kano, Alhaji (Dr) Ado Bayero, who passed on peacefully Friday morning at the age of 83. In a letter of condolence to the family of the late respected emir, the governor said his death would leave a vacuum in the country, as the late monarch did his best to uphold the unity of Nigeria. Fashola added that for the over 51 years he spent as the traditional ruler of Kano, the monarch made his mark as a worthy trailblazer who was concerned about the welfare and progress of not just his people but also, the entire nation. The governor noted that Bayero, apart from being a revered traditional ruler, also contributed his quota to the development of Nigeria in his role as chancellor of the University of Nigeria, and subsequently, of the University of Ibadan. I join millions of Kano citizens and Nigerians to mourn the departure of one of the greats.” ADO BAYERO NEVER KNEW HE WOULD BE EMIR- SHEHU MALAMI Mallam Shehu Malami, Nigeria’s former high commissioner to South Africa in the administration of General Sani Abacha and a childhood friend of the late emir of Kano, said Ado Bayero never knew he would be the new emir back in 1963. According to him, Ado Bayero was Nigeria’s ambassador to Senegal when the emir of Kano, Mohammed Inuwa died and he was home on a condolence visit when he was told that he would be the new emir. “A friend of his told him at the airport that he’d better change out of the suit he was hearing, because he was the new emir of Kano,” Malami said. He added that everybody thought the district head of Bichi, who was the eldest son of the late emir would be the successor. “In addition, the district head of Bichi was married to the daughter of Sir Ahmadu Bello, the late premier of the North. Everybody was surprised when Bayero was named as the new emir, because nobody dared go against the interest of Ahmadu Bello. It shows how administratively, things were working then. Ahmadu Bello never objected or tried to change the decision of the kingmakers, but allowed things to occur naturally.” GOVERNOR MURTALA NYAKO OF ADAMAWA STATE, commiserates with Kano People over emir’s death Governor Murtala Nyako has described the demise of the late emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, as a monumental loss not only to Kano State, but also to the nation and humanity in general. The governor made the remark in a press statement signed and issued by his director of press and public affairs, Mallam Ahmad Sajoh yesterday. He said the late monarch was a man of peace and a father to all, saying his fatherly advice would be missed by the country. Nyako urged the government and good people of Kano State to take his death in good faith, saying every life must pass through the process. He prayed Allah to grant him eternal rest in paradise. Saraki, Sulu-Gambari mourn Ado Bayero THE FORMER GOVERNOR OF KWARA STATE, DR. BUKOLA SARAKI, has expressed shock over the demise of the emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero. Saraki described the late monarch as a great ruler whose contributions were instrumental to the positive development and growth of Kano State, northern Nigeria and Nigeria as a whole. ACMARIN said the passing away of Emir Bayero was a sad loss to the entire country, adding that the foremost traditional ruler died at a time when his wise counsel was highly needed. In a press statement issued by the national leader of the group, Light His Royal Majesty Eze (Dr) Ezedioramma M.C. Aniagu (JP) in Abuja yesterday, the peace advocacy group described the deceased as a bridge builder who led an exemplary life characterised by honesty, fairness, generosity and service to God and humanity. “HRH Ado Bayero was a true Nigerian, a bridge builder and peace loving monarch. As a national patron of ACMATRIN, he helped a lot in deepening cooperation and understanding among religious faiths in Nigeria and ultimately promoted peace and unity in the country, hence his death was irreparable loss,” Aniagu said. I HAVE LOST A FATHER= ATIKU Former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, has said that he has lost a father in the Emir of Kano Ado Bayero, who passed on today at the age of 83. In a personal tribute to Ado Bayero, Atiku said that his relationship with the late emir was that of a father and a favourite son, spanning over three decades. A visibly pained Atiku said that he knew that death was coming, but not in agony and humiliation, because he (Ado Bayero) did not deserve it. He said that Ado Bayero had been loyal to not only his people in his immediate domain, but also to Nigeria and humanity at large. According to Atiku, Ado Bayero was a pious, humble, upright and honest man, whose integrity was unparalleled. He noted that the death of Bayero had robbed the nation of a noble crusader of unity, tolerance and peaceful co-existence. The former vice president recalled that promoting unity and tolerance was one of Ado Bayero’s greatest and unforgettable legacies. According to him, Nigeria had lost a crusader for peace, stability and unity at a time his services were still badly needed by the country. Ado Bayero will be remembered for his love for peace – ACF The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has said that the late emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, would be remembered for his wisdom, elegance and love for the peaceful coexistence of all Nigerians, irrespective of tribe and religion. ACF, in a statement by its spokesman, Muhammed Ibrahim said, “Nigeria has lost a royal father.” The forum said that the late emir, who ruled the Kano Emirate for more than 50 years, devoted his life to the progress of Kano people in the areas of education, agriculture and general socio-economic development of Kano State. According to ACF, the emir was also a bridge builder, who used his connections to promote peace and harmony not only in Kano, but also across the country. “Late Ado Bayero brought candour, elegance, royalty and respect to the emirship of Kano and equally promoted its rich culture to the admiration of Nigerians and the world,” the statement read. Zazzau Emirate describes Bayero’s death as loss to Nigeria The chairman of the Kaduna State Council of Chiefs,THE EMIR OF ZAZZAU, ALH. DR. SHEHU IDRIS, yesterday described the death of the emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, as a great loss to the North and Nigeria at large. The emir spoke through his protocol officer Alh Sani Ladan, while reacting to the passing away of Bayero early Friday morning. He said, “This is not only a loss to the family and traditional council and people of Kano State, but to the entire nation. “We really lost a humble, courageous, charismatic and cheerful leader, who always cares for the wellbeing of his people. “We pray God Almighty to grant his gentle soul eternal rest and give the family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss,” he prayed. AMOSUN MOURNS ADO BAYERO Ogun State governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has expressed deep regret over the death of the emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero (CFR), who died at the age of 83. The governor expressed his condolences to the government and people of Kano State, the State Emirate Council and Nigeria in general on the exit of the foremost traditional ruler. In a statement by his senior special assistant on Media, Mrs Olufunmilayo Wakama, Amosun described Bayero as one of the revered traditional rulers in Nigeria, who preached peace and believed in the unity of the country. “The death of Alhaji Ado Bayero is regrettable because, even at his age, he was in the vanguard of efforts to curb the activities of insurgents in the North,” Amosun said.
