SEEKING HELP Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. (James 5:14) We live in a world that suggests it is shameful to be weak or to ask for help. Many of us were taught at an early age that we need to take care of our own problems so as not to burden others with our cares. Men perhaps more so than women have been programmed to never show weakness for fear of scorn, ridicule or perhaps increased attacks from those around us. Society is slowly but surely teaching that lesson to more and more women as well. When Christians suffer in silence, we play directly into the Devils hand. We isolate ourselves at the very point when we need the most help from our Christian brothers and sisters and from God. If youve ever been in combat or watched a realistic combat movie, it should be clear how important it is to have communication with other people on your side so that you can call for help if it is needed. How many spy shows have you watched where the bad guys make a point of cutting the phone lines or jamming the radio signal? The Devil loves it when we keep our troubles to ourselves, because then he can surround us and lay siege to us, waiting for our eventual surrender. If left unchanged, its probably just a matter of time. As James was inspired to write, please call for help when things arent going well. Whether you are physically sick, or emotionally hurting, or financially troubled, spiritually starving... whatever sickness may be affecting you, the elders want to know so that help can be offered. Many times, the only help readily available may be prayer, but seeking Gods help in any situation is far superior to much of what mankind has to offer. James goes on to say, Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.
