SEMI-LEGAL – In watching the news this morning, there was a story about the Immigration Reform Bill, how the Bill had made it through Committee and now faced rigorous discussion-debate on the Senate floor in days to come. The word ‘Illegal’ was used several times to refer to the estimated 11 million or so ‘Immigrants’ for whom the Bill would provide a path to citizenship. It occurred to me that Liberals likely hate the word ‘Illegal’ as much as they hate the word ‘Terrorist’. They have already managed to shift the debate from ‘Aliens’ to ‘Immigrants’, right? This raises a question in my mind: Will Liberals one day find middle ground between legal and illegal? In the Liberal mind, it just might be possible to be ‘Semi-legal’ IF one has obtained a driver’s license, held a job, paid a penny or more in taxes and enrolled children in the public school system. It’s the old ‘looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck’ argument. If an illegal alien (oops, immigrant) has taken on many of the traits of legality, why continue to call them illegal? Why not lend them some of the ‘dignity’ they deserve and call them ‘Semi-legal’? We all understand it’s impossible for a woman to be ‘a little pregnant’. She either is or she isn’t: no middle ground. Likewise it’s impossible for an illegal alien to be ‘a little legal’. But this is no problem with Liberal thinking. So how long will it be before we hear the word ‘Semi-legal’ come from the mouth of a Liberal?
