The USP is one of two regional universities in the world and is the leading tertiary education provider and research facility in the South Pacific. The USP recognises the importance of research activity to our academic staff and therefore provides incentives to encourage research and publications output. With over 26,000 students around the Pacific region, we are supported by 12 Pacific Island Countries; Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. The Opportunity The appointee will be responsible for the development, management and operations of the Alafua Campus Library located in Apia, Samoa. The appointee will be expected to implement customer and technical services to meet the information needs of the Alafua Campus. Duties will include a wide range of library information services to face-to-face and distance & flexible learning students, staff and general users; collection development through acquisitions and gifts & exchange; cataloguing and classification using AACR2, LC Classification, DDC, and MARC formats; the maintenance of a serials collection in both print and electronic formats; the maintenance of the automated integrated library system (currently Athena); the production of library publications; the supervision and training of paraprofessional staff; and liaison with academic staff and with other Library staff at the Laucala campus and within the USP Library system. Library professionals with a Master’s degree recognized by an international accrediting body such as ALIA and with five or more years of senior library management experience; strong professional and leadership skills in customer and technical services; excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to work as the only professional on site and experience working and living in a developing country are invited to apply for this position located at the USP Library Alafua Campus in Samoa. The Person We Seek Applicants must have: • A Master’s degree or higher in Library Information Science recognized by an accrediting body such as the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) • At least 10 years of proven management experience in an academic library, coordinating and motivating a team and identifying targets, applying performance management and quality assurance techniques; • Self-motivated with wide experience in customer services, collections management and selection; and significant knowledge and at least 5 years’ experience in Library Customer Services and/or Technical Services, including advanced knowledge and experience in international library standards such as AACR2, LC Classification & Subject Headings, LCRI, and MARC formats • Substantial knowledge and experience in using Library IT applications and online systems, and have awareness that changing technologies in the library world are integral to the post. • Cross-service working, experience of marketing and responding to customer needs and the ability to participate in wider based multi-service initiatives • Well developed team leadership, consensus building, training, supervisory and performance management skills • Ability to develop and implement strategy and policy for the library aligned to the University Strategic Plan; identify service developments; manage projects, budgets and produce reports • Excellent communication (both written and oral) skills and demonstrable abilities to work under pressure, prioritize and delegate tasks • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills, including the ability to identify issues and implement sound solutions • Demonstrated active involvement with local library associations and/or regional and international professional association • Ability and willingness to work evening and weekend duties on a rostered basis Preference will be given to applicants with the ability and desire to think beyond traditional library service; knowledge of RDA; experience in dealing with library users in a multicultural environment; work experience or understanding of life in a developing country; awareness of current regional and national priorities. Remuneration The position is available for a term of three years and may be renewed by mutual agreement. Salary Range: Band 4 WST 122,482.23 to WST 141,326.65 per annum (Inclusive of 15% Gratuity) Please note the salary scale is subject to change pending the outcome of the Job Evaluation Review.
