SEPARATE AMPS OF THE 80S... These six I chose because they were the tried and true mainstays. Other companies like DBX ,SAE,Sony, TECHNICS and Kenwood made similar looking amps, but for various reasons were not as popular. The Nakamichi Pa7: Licensed stasis 1 topology from Nelson Pass. The good part: earth-shattering current and power. Absolute bass grip and attack. bad part: subject to thermal runaway and oscillation...not always stable. Denon POA-2200: looks like a cylon, solid power and clean sound Yamaha M-85: pretty serious stuff. Used black gate caps and some nice internals. Plenty of power and a hypnotic K.I.T.T./knight rider meter. Carver M1.5t: duplicated transfer function and sound of a $30,000 Mark Levinson amp. The snob press/audisbobs were outranged, but a double blind ABX proved no one could tell it apart from the ML. Onkyo M-108: Built IMO to partially emulate the smooth, polite sound of tubes. Not necessarily the strongest amp, but a refreshing alternative to some of the harsh or murky sounding dreck on the market. Stunningly beautiful VU meter display. Adcom GFA-555: lots of current, straightforward and plenty of power for any speaker.
