SERG, NEEDS YOUR HELP....S.T.R.O.N.G. NEEDS YOUR HELP...PLEASE READ... Hard to believe its’ been 13 years! Thirteen years since a tragedy that shook a community resulted in a calling for a group of teens and kids in their early 20’s to action. The brutal beating death of Eric Rivera killed on the way home from the Puerto Rican Day Parade in June of 2000 will never be forgotten. It was the day our community lost another child, but his death birthed a movement; one that has saved hundreds (if not thousands) of lives in his name. Today, we continue our struggle in the names of hundreds we have lost to violence on our streets and thousands we have lost locally to prisons. Our will and our spirit has never been tested as much as it has over the past year and a half with the complete defunding of youth services and partial restoration, OUR AGENCY IS ON LIFE SUPPORT, like so many youth we have seen fight for their lives on respirators. Yet Our Struggle Continues..... We continue inspiring young people in communities across our region to push on, defy statistics, and make dreams a reality. We continue teaching love and compassion, where there is hate and hostility, urging youth to be the change they wish to be (because "seeing" just aint cutting it). We will continue to plant seeds of transformation offering hope to youth that are fighting and destroying themselves for a color that means nothing and a corner they do not own. We continue to shower youth that live incarcerated by desperation, isolated by hopelessness, with love. After all, no jail cell exemplifies the true meaning of rehabilitation and redemption, teaching benevolence and resilience, like S.T.R.O.N.G. can. We must continue our struggle, because our youth need us to stand S.T.R.O.N.G. We cannot continue without you! This weekend, S.T.R.O.N.G. Youth’s Executive Director Rahsmia “Mia” Zatar, is running for us! She is running the Spartan Race as a fundraiser for us! She is running for you, for me, and for our children! I am setting out to fundraise $4,000 in 4 days, for the four-mile obstacle course she will run. Would you please consider supporting my fundraising effort by showing Mia we appreciate her sacrifice?
