** SEVERE WEATHER WARNING ** ** PILBARA ** Severe Thunderstorm Warning for damaging wind for the Pilbara forecast district Issued at 7:44 pm WST on Sunday 26 January 2014. For people in parts of the Pilbara north of a line from Whim Creek to Yarrie to Pardoo. This includes people in, near or between the following towns: Port Hedland. At 7:30 pm radar imagery showed a line of thunderstorms approximately 110 kilometres east of Port Hedland. This line of storms is expected to reach Port Hedland around 9:00 pm. Storms may be accompanied by - DAMAGING WINDS Storms could cause DAMAGE TO HOMES AND PROPERTY. Wind gusts to 85 kilometres per hour have been reported from Shay Gap. The overall weather pattern is not unusual for this time of year, but severe weather may occur in some parts of the warning area. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should: If outside find safe shelter away from trees, power lines, storm water drains and streams. Close your curtains and blinds, and stay inside away from windows. Unplug electrical appliances and do not use land line telephones if there is lightning. If boating, swimming or surfing leave the water. Be alert and watch for hazards on the road such as fallen power lines and loose debris. The next warning will be issued by 10:45 pm WST Sunday.
