SF Police Commission Meeting From Patty Muffintop: On - TopicsExpress

SF Police Commission Meeting From Patty Muffintop: On October 22nd, I and four other NSNW members attended the Police Commission Meeting at Balboa High School. Captain McFadden did an overview of crime in the Ingleside District, the commissioners introduced themselves, Chief Suhr spoke very briefly, the head of the organization to file complaints against the police (the OCC) talked about what they do and their stats. I attend a lot of meetings but I’ve never been to a meeting like this one and it gave me a new perspective on the problems that we have been discussing here, on the Excelsior District FB page and in my NSNW meetings and other community meetings. Most of the meeting focused on Alex Nieto and on other instances of alleged police violence, malfeasance and misfeasance. It was heartbreaking. I spoke very briefly, under the influence of A LOT of Flonase unfortunately (why did they have to mow the lawn at Glen Park AND at Balboa High! I hate my allergies). I expressed to Chief Greg Suhr, who was stating straight at me from the first row, that the problems in the Excelsior are unique. They are unique because of our geographical location within the green zone – first pot north of San Jose. I told him that we have a lot of people coming into our area from all over the City and outside the city and that we lack the police force to deal with this large influx of problematic “guests”. I told him that many residents are not comfortable with The Green Cross providing DPW, SFMTA and public safety services – that those services should be provided by the City and that we should not have to feel grateful to a pot club for providing amenities we already pay for and are entitled to. I told him that people in this neighborhood are ANGRY. I told him people who look like me are furious, and, based on what I heard from other speakers, people who don’t look like me are ANGRY and AFRAID. I asked for a large number of dedicated foot patrol officers who will take the time to meet and know the merchants, to interact with pedestrians, to take the time to get to know us and our concerns, and scare off the bad guys. I know he could hear me – I hope he was listening. Supervisors Avalos, Campos and Wiener did not attend last night. I thought that was very strange as it was the perfect opportunity for them to address the police commission publicly with the residents’/their constituencys concerns. Another reminder that we are basically without representation in District 11. Sigh.
