SHIFT WORK RECOGNITION DAY 2014 For people across Saskatchewan, - TopicsExpress

SHIFT WORK RECOGNITION DAY 2014 For people across Saskatchewan, Shift Work Recognition Day is an important occasion, recognizing an issue that touches the lives of thousands within our province every year. Communities such as Prince Albert, Saskatoon, Regina, Yorkton, North Battleford, Moose Jaw, Estevan, and Humboldt have all proclaimed March 20th as a day to recognize shift workers and the many important services they provide. This year is also the first year that March 20 will be officially recognized as a provincial day of observance. “The people that do shift work in Saskatchewan provide our communities with valuable services,” said Sandy Weyland, Chair of the Saskatchewan Federation of Labour’s Shift Work Committee, “and they often do so at the expense of their own health. I am extremely pleased that the Provincial Government has agreed to recognize these working people by proclaiming a day in their honour, adding to a growing list of jurisdictions that already celebrate Shift Work Recognition Day.” In recent years, a number of studies have linked shift work to serious ailments like chronic sleep deprivation, which exposes people to a range of problems including depression and an increased risk of injury on the job. A 2010 study found that people that do shift work are almost twice as likely to be injured on the job, and that women are particularly susceptible to problems related to shift work and sleep deprivation. “We should all be extremely thankful for the women and men that sacrifice time with their families, their sleep, and, in many cases, their health in order to provide valuable services to our communities and to our province. Shift Work Recognition Day is now a provincial day of observance, and an important opportunity to offer a well-deserved ‘thank you’ to shift workers across Saskatchewan.”
