As your constituent I am calling for you to take urgent action to stop people in the world’s poorest countries being pushed into hunger because of EU biofuels targets. As a person who works in Sustainability I note with happiness the number of UK Local Authorities (LAs ) whom are trying to ensure that bio-fuels supplies do not come from unsustainable sources, ploughed up forest or land, crops previously used to provide food etc, or effect food supplies to communities and people because of effecting the food crop supply market. However this is actually really difficult to look into and control for the LAs, and a Europe wide approach is really what is needed NOW. Meeting existing targets would push the price of some crops up by as much as a third, driving hunger in countries already struggling with food insecurity. In Yorkshire and the Humber alone, we burn enough food in our cars every year to feed 660,000 people for a year. You have the chance to put food before fuel when biofuel policy is put to the vote in the European Parliament in September. I urge you to vote for a 5% cap on biofuels grown on land that could be used to grow food as a step towards ending food for fuel in Europe. A 5% cap will stop millions more being pushed into hunger. I look forward to hearing your response.
