SINDH Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah has said that Rangers andPolice were performing well in the ongoing operation against outlaws and gangs of all sorts in Karachi to bring much needed peace in the economic hub of the country. Not only the Chief Executive of the Province but news pouring in from a cross section of the society reflect that in fact the operation is being conducted in a transparent manner and only identified criminals, extortionists and target killers were being nabbed. It is beginning of the returning of normalcy and the psychological environment of relative peace has generated confidence among the people that things would be normalised in due course of time. It is so because the operation has been across the board and not against any party and that is why it has greater acceptability. There has been significant reduction in incidents of target killings, kid-napping and extortion since the go ahead was given to the Rangers. Though reports reveal that majority of the top target killers and extortionists have temporarily fled from Karachi, yet arrests of dozens of outlaws on daily basis has given aclear signal to them that theLaw Enforcement Agencies were serious in handling the issue and no political influence would come to their rescue. However, it is a fact that cancer of lawlessness and culture of extortion and gangs of all sorts is deep rooted and seeped intopolitical parties which have knowingly supported it for the attainment of their objectives. It is too early to draw a definite conclusion about the impact of the operation because there is possibility that those who have fled the city or gone under ground will again try to assert their influence as old habitsdie hard. Unless and until heads of gangs are arrested and punished according to law, the danger would remain and possibly they would re-emerge with vengeance. Therefore we would stress that even after the operation, a vigilant eye must be kept so that criminals do not make Karachi hostage once again.
