SLICES OF LIFE: 7TH July 2013 SPIRITUAL SNIPERS Part 1: 2 Samuel 15:31 “And David said, O LORD, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.” Snipers are assets to covert operations; they are specially trained to liquidate their targets with pinpoint precision. A sniper can take down one person amidst a million people without an accidental spill over. Once they have acquired the target within the crosshairs, they proceed to take their target down. The wind, light, temperature, etc all affects the strike of the bullet, but the wind poses the greatest problem, especially if it is over a long range. The sniper must take all these into consideration before taking the shot. David was in a state of distress, Absalom his son had risen against him with one agenda in mind to take over his kingdom. David’s moment of pleasure has cost him much and is about to cost him, his kingdom and his life. Recession has not changed the price of sin, it is still costly. As he was weeping together with his entourage, word came to him that Ahithophel had joined Absalom camp. David knew the worth of Ahithophel and the damage he is capable of inflicting with his counsel for Absalom. He prayed that God should nullify the counsel of Ahithophel. Ahithophel gave his counsel to Absalom and Absalom discountenanced it. 2Samuel 17:14 And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel. For the LORD had appointed to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that the LORD might bring evil upon Absalom. Then Ahithophel commited suicide and Absalom’s insurrection fell apart. If Absalom had heeded Ahithophel’s counsel, David and his army may have been killed. Let us consider the following slices: (1) We don’t know how to pray. “We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will.” Romans 8:26-27 (2) We can be better marksmen in the place of prayer. Spiritual understanding gives us a sniper-like focus in spiritual warfare. It was a a game changing prayer. David did not ask that Absalom should die No. He has an understanding of the situation. He prayed a prayer that had a domino effect, which sends all of Absalom strategy crumbling down, yet this prayer, was not aimed at Absalom directly. (3) Light affects the way the sniper sees the target through the scope. How are you seeing the problem? Are you looking at it through the scope of God’s word? The bible is often compared to a light. Consider David’s prayer concerning Ahithophel to what the bible says here: Job 5:12 “He disappointeth the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform their enterprise.” See you tomorrow Jesus is Lord.
