SLOW INITIATIVES: Still tangled in red tape 15 NOV 2013: The head of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives says efforts to ease trade, travel and commerce across the Canada-US border badly need a shot in the arm. John Manley says progress on Beyond the Border been disappointingly modest and that a historic opportunity to slash red tape at the border is in real danger of slipping away. Manley will meet today with Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder and 100 Canadian and US business leaders in Detroit. Prime Minister Stephen Harper and US President Barack Obama announced the Beyond the Border initiatives during a White House meeting two years ago in hopes of fuelling economic growth, job creation and competitiveness. Despite some progress, Manley says theres still no sign of a comprehensive pre-clearance and pre-inspection agreement for passengers and cargo, nor an expansion of benefits for trusted traders. Both are top priorities for exporters and other companies that do business across the border. Canadian and US officials have a long way to go to improve North American border efficiency, Manley says.
