SMALL AIRPLANE CRASH IN MICHIGAN HAS A RICHMOND, INDIANA CONNECTION BERRIEN SPRINGS -- A small airplane crashed in a backyard late Friday morning in Berrien Springs, leaving the pilot and three passengers hospitalized. The single-engine Piper Comanche crashed shortly after 11:14 a.m. along the 500 block of Bluff Street. When police arrived, two people had escaped from the plane, but two others had to be extricated from the mangled wreckage, said Berrien Springs acting Police Chief Rick Smiedendorf. At least one of the injuries was classified as serious, but there were no immediate fatalities, Smiedendorf said. The occupants were a male pilot, one male passenger and two female passengers, he said. The planes starting point and destination were still unclear early Friday afternoon, Smiedendorf said. The Federal Aviation Administration had been notified and would be handling the investigation into the crash, he said. According to the FAA web site, the 1959 Piper PA-24 Commanche is registered to a man in Richmond, Ind. The online live flight tracking web site, Flight Aware, shows the plane departed from Richmond Municipal Airport at 9:53 a.m. with a scheduled arrival time at Andrews University Airpark shortly after 11 a.m. However, an accompanying tracking map shows the plane flying over and beyond the Andrews University Airpark before veering to the east to the eventual crash site. Duane Habenicht, manager at the Andrews University Airpark, said the plane was headed to the airpark but was not an Andrews plane. This article will be updated as more information becomes available.
