SNEAK PEAK AT THE JULY ISSUE OF TUI MOTU!! A NOTE BELOW FROM THE EDITORIAL TEAM... "Kia ora, greetings and blessings from the team at Tui Motu. This month Tui Motu focuses on the idea of “the common good”; and an increasingly important dimension to this concept: this good earth’s poor health. Common good articles include: • Professor Andrew Bradstock’s delving into history and tradition to ask “Are we discovering afresh that we are fundamentally social beings, that it is more satisfying to live in a society in which we all flourish …?” • Lenten talks in Auckland. These come from a great range of voices – from the mayor to public health lecturer to an economist and those working in the community. Powerful readings. • Bishop Peter Cullinane’s trenchant evocation of the importance of work The ecological dimension to the common good adds: • Professor Jonathan Boston’s summation of the global situation concerning climate change. • Ron Sharp’s comments on how we have “swamped the common good” with our industrial-strength selfishness, but that we are embarking on a new journey of hope • Seán McDonagh’s theological reflection on the concepts undergirding ecology (much on Celtic theology and a bit on the magnificent, doomed Philippine eagle) • Our honorary director, Frank Hoffmann’s, reflections upon farming methods, so crucial to our relationship with the land. Our regular features this month: • Editorial comment: Fr Toomey writes on the too-low profile constitutional debate • Letters to the editor • Poems by Neil Darragh and Joanie Roberson • Hitchhiker’s Guide to Church History: this month is Colin MacLeod’s description of St Paul and his role in the first 200 years of Church history • Gospel commentary on Jesus’ Visit to Martha and Mary • Book reviews: o The Ultimate Challenge by Ron O’Grady o Exploring Theology Together: A History of the Catholic Institute of Theology, Auckland by Diane Strevens • Film review: The Reluctant Fundamentalist • “Crosscurrents” by Jim Ellison discusses the value of science for faith • “A Mother’s Journal” by Kaaren Mathias shares the joy of all she is grateful for. We also have Father Peter Norris’ obituary for Father Edmund Little, who cared so deeply about the poor and justice. Some key quotes from this month: • “A sense of belonging through our connectedness to others in relationship is a key aspect of hauora/health.” (Pat Neuwelt, public health physician) • “If the right to an adequate income was at the heart of welfare policy, and the rights of all children to social security, housing, education and healthcare prioritised, people would still go to work and society would not collapse. The world might be more socially stable…” (Associate Professor Susan St John, a founding member of the Child Poverty Action Group) • “Now what we need to recognize in terms of climate change is that ‘neighbour’ includes those not yet born, whose well-being we can affect by our actions or failure to act.” (Professor Jonathan Boston) • “If you have come to help me you are wasting your time, but if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.” (Lila Watson, an aboriginal Australian)
