SNOOKS TREADWAY!!! Long ,long ago and not so far away Snooks had a camp in the Bayou behind Port Sulphur near Freeport’s Sulphur mine. This was before the marsh eroded away. One winter in the early 60s Snooks invited Blackie Barrar and I to spend the weekend at the camp to get in some fishing.. At the time I had a flat boat and an outboard motor. Not even a windshield. We came in from work an put some food and clothes in paper bags.Loaded it ,our fishing poles , My dog Champ and a gallon of Rose" wine in the boat. Winter time and by the time we launched the boat it was dark. Headed back out Freeports canal. Turned off at halfway Bayou which went into a lake. About halfway across the lake the motor sputtered several times and stopped. We filled the gas can from the five gallon spare can. Which we should have done before we left home. While doing this the north wind was blowing some 20 miles an not only pushed the boat but turned it round and round. We knew there was an opening from the lake into a canal. We puttt putted along uonil we found the lake shoreline. Followed it a ways until we found an opening. We went through the opening and came into a canal. Followed it for a time and decided we were going the wrong way. Headed back the oyher way and finally saw a dim light coming from what looked like a window. We went to it and it was Snooks"s camp. Pulled the boat up on the bank . Took Champ ( A short haired dog and as cold as us.) and our belonging in. Snooks was getting ready to go look for us. He had a big pot of Rabbit (he said.) stew simmering. Drank a couple of glasses of Rose" to warm up. The stew almost as good as any Ms. Barbara makes. Up the next morning to get in some fishing. Snooks said best to check youy boat. The strong North wind blew all the water out of the canal. Our boats were high on the bank and not enough water to float them. This called for more Rose: and more stew.
