SO WHAT KIND OF WEEKEND DID YOU HAVE? Mine began last Thursday when I drove to Reno to hang out with my ex-wife (and good friend) Patricia, and ended yesterday, when I was discharged from Renos St. Marys Medical Center after experiencing a major stroke! All that began Saturday morning as I was taking a leisurely ride along the Tahoe-Pyramid Bikeway...My bike suddenly turned to rubber under me, and I fought to stay balanced before crashing to the asphalt...It took me about fifteen minutes to figure out the problem wasnt with the bike, but with me. By the time paramedics arrived, I had lost the use of my right leg, right arm, and my speech was down to one slurred word at a time. After a quick ride to the ER, I was going downhill fast, and a neurologist was mixing up a batch of very powerful (and dangerous) clot-buster meds in a last-ditch effort to stop the stroke, when suddenly everything shifted into reverse! Within minutes, my treatment bay was clogged with ER docs and nurses who were there to witness something most had never before seen: The complete resolution of a full bilateral stroke. After being poked, prodded, scanned and MRId for two days, the folks at St. Marys could find no evidence of lasting damage. I drove home today, tired, sore, and very glad to be alive! No one can say why it all turned around, but my favorite quote from this experience comes from Vascular Specialist Richard Foster: If you hadnt been in such great physical condition when you came in here, he said, you would be spending the rest of your life in a bed, shitting yourself. REMEMBER MY MOTTO: THE FIT SHALL INHERIT THE EARTH!
