SO embarrassing - its been a long time since I had a surprise foal (my first year with Portia!) But last night husband came in after walking the dogs and said: When is the brown mare due to foal? Once Id found out WHICH brown horse he was talking about, I reassured him she wasnt pregnant (it was Brook.) Then I started thinking. Shed been very fat early in the season and in the last 3 weeks she HAD lost quite a bit along the topline - Id assumed it was because Id taken that group off ad-lib haylage bale - as they were ALL too fat! So got to the field this morning - guess what! A nice colt! Bloody old mares - they always look pregnant! But it IS the last Raj foal - so Ill forgive her. And it gave me a nice chance to stir my vet when he arrived this morning - hed declared her N.I.F. at her last 14 day scan - and Id decided it was too late in the season so we didnt check again!
