SOMETHING TO PONDER SPIRITUAL DISCERNMENT And I said, Should such a man as I flee? And who is their such as I who would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in! Then I perceived that God had not sent him at all, but that he pronounced this prophecy against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him. (Nehemiah 6:11,12) NKJV Here was Nehemiah, the kings cupbearer, tasked by God to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. But he faced many challenges like ridicule and all kinds threat from the opposition. His people also sinned against their God. And to top it all, a man was sent by the opposition to falsely prophesy to Nehemiah. But what did Nehemiah do? How did he react? 1. Nehemiah acted with spiritual discernment: He perceived that God had not sent him. 2. Nehemiah feared the Lord: He was led by the spirit of God to say and do the right thing. Many people get excited about the many spiritual gifts and would like to have all of them. While theres nothing wrong in having these gifts but if anybody desires any gift, its advisable to ask for the gift of discernment. Solomon asked God for wisdom so that he could know how to rule over his people. The Bible says, The fear of the Lord is the beginning of Knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. (Proverbs 1:7) NKJV There are many examples in the Bible of people not exercising discernment, and hence theyve made bad decisions, failing miserably. Wisdom knows that the Lord is the source of any spiritual advancement. Its important to act with discernment. The wise will discern the true origin of many verbal attacks as an assault motivated by our spiritual enemy. Understand also, that success and favour comes from the Lord.
