SONG OF THE DAY: And So I Watch You From Afar - Dont Waste Time Doing Things You Hate --- These guys are technically a part of the post-rock subgenre, but they are really doing so many different things all within the framework of each individual song, and the resulting sound is very exciting. They have the sense of beauty that bands like Explosions in the Sky and Caspian possess, the off-kilter rhythms of a Don Caballero, the epic prog sensibilities of The Mars Volta, and the guitar-centric assault of a band like Fall of Troy. But when you listen to And So I Watch You From Afar, they very clearly do not sound like any of those aforementioned bands. They just combine the various components that each of those bands excel at into a sound that is definitely their own. I also really enjoy how they utilize sparse vocals to compliment the music. No verse/chorus/verse stuff, just single, repeated refrains, or simple LaLaLa-type chants here and there; it doesnt distract from the song by taking the forefront, it simply acts as another layer of harmony, which is what I have always thought should be more of a focus in terms of the role vocals take on in music anyways. Some people might refer to this as musicians music, as in, inaccessible to the average listener, but I totally disagree with that assessment. There is a such a good vibe pouring forth from all of their tunes. Even when they are at their heaviest, or their most melancholy, they always sound like they are having fun. I cant really explain what it is that makes me feel that way, when I dont necessarily get that feeling from other bands, even ones that I really like. You just have to listen and see if you understand. But I will say, I have always gotten the same sense from Coheed and Cambria. Its like, they have a sound that is the result of a group of musicians at the top of their game, totally owning what they do, and having a blast doing it. Those vibes, whether they are intentional or real, transfer directly into my brain and my heart, and boost my own mood. I suppose thats ultimately what really successful music does. youtube/watch?v=bSn68GYmM-M
