SONG OF THE DAY: Ghosts and Vodka - Is That a Person? --- Really - TopicsExpress

SONG OF THE DAY: Ghosts and Vodka - Is That a Person? --- Really interesting, really obscure band today...Ghosts and Vodka was one of the brief side bands that materialized out of the legendary family tree which grew from Chicagos emo-rock foundation-layers Cap n Jazz. After the breakup of that band, two of its members helped form another indie-rock giant, Joan of Arc, but then they left the band for a couple of years to pursue this upbeat, sort-of-mathy instrumental project. Existing from 1998-2001, Ghosts and Vodka didnt pre-empt Don Caballero, but they essentially entered the instrumental rock game before any of the other artists that would become cornerstones of that subgenre, like Explosions in the Sky, Caspian, Pelican, Russian Circles, Red Sparowes, This Will Destroy You, etc. And unlike those bands, who mostly prescribe to longer song structures and a more epic scope, Ghosts and Vodka opted to express themselves through quick, upbeat, bouncy tracks like this one, as well as some quieter songs driven by a single acoustic guitar. Unfortunately, much like many of the bands that followed in the wake of Cap n Jazz, Ghosts and Vodka never really explored all of their potential, leaving behind a very small catalog of songs before its members moved on to the equally short-lived Owls, before finally re-joining Joan of Arc. However, I have to say, of all the Cap n Jazz progeny (others include the dreamy-indie outfit American Football, the early emo legends The Promise Ring, the math-rock group Make Believe, and current bands Owen and Their/Theyre/There), Ghosts and Vodka could be my favorite. Theyre all kind of different and there is something to enjoy with each one, but I really connect with Ghosts and Vodkas vibe. Too bad theres not more to explore with them. Every song they ever recorded can be found on the release Addicts and Drunks, which combines their two records, the Memento Mori EP, and the Precious Blood LP. Highly recommended. https://youtube/watch?v=EfpkBC-a-xg
