SONG OF THE DAY: Pinback - True North (live in KEXP studio) --- 15 years into their career, these guys remain one of the great treasures of American indie rock. They have crafted a truly unique sound with the interplay of dual vocals, as well as the way the bass and guitar weave together to share both rhythmic and melodic duties. Zach Smith is one of the most creative and underrated bassists out there - you can see that in this song as he commands both the rhythmic drive and the main riff of the song with those mesmerizing octave chords. Rob Crowe complements Smiths basslines perfectly on guitar, adding a layer of melody on top, and his voice is so smooth and soothing, yet constantly compelling (and you would never expect to hear that voice coming out of that big, burly bearded dude). I like how they have always used programmed drums on their studio recordings, and then they tour with a drummer to give the songs a slightly different feel - the minor variation keeps things interesting, and works more effectively in a live setting.
