SOUTH AUSTRALIAN ARCHITECTURE AWARDS 2013 We are pleased to announce Phillip/Pilkington & Flightpath Architects in association have received two awards at this years South Australian Architecture Awards for St Peters Town Hall Complex. HERITAGE : Architecture Award Citation: St Peters Town Hall is a highly competent adaptive re-use project that brings life to a series of Council-owned and underutilised facilities of mixed age and condition. The innovative design solution allows reactivation of the early 20th Century historic Town Hall chamber as a library and other buildings as offices, community meeting rooms and a radio station. A new mezzanine level has been successfully inserted into the historic chamber, providing a 21st Century library that still respects the civic scale and proportion of the earlier space. The architectural language expressed by the project team is intentionally modern, but still sensitive to the historic context of the place. Steel portal arches, glass entrance pavilions and timber screens identify new library spaces and movement paths through the previously disparate collection of buildings. Careful contemporary detailing and arrangement of junctions adjacent heritage fabric illustrates the design team’s skill in balancing the co-existence of contemporary and historic detailing. The Jury was also particularly impressed and supportive of the unique collaborative design approach of the project team. Both Practices had particular skills to bring to the project but all worked together to produce a single design vision of clarity and merit.
