Lack of options 3. Cultural and value differences 4. Overreaction 5. Impaired by chemicals or catastrophic mental illness 6. Emotional paralysis 7. Limited approaches 8. Needs not met 9. Conflict gains attention 10. Ignorance 11. Familiarity trap WHAT TO DO TO HELP DIFFICULT PATIENTS 1. Eliminate power struggles 2. Feed your patients therapeutic “BIG MACS” (assign homework) 3. Teach problem solving skills 4. Denial is a manifestation of: It is smart to deny wrongdoing, Ignorance, It is easier than being responsible, 5. Use strengths to compensate for deficits 6. Motivation is the key to change 7. Give your patients a dream of a “MILLION DOLLARS” , What would you do? 8. Paradoxical Interventions, exaggerate the symptom to over come the problem. 9. Bring in other nursing staff or psychology staff for brain storming. 10. Model healthy coping behaviors 11. Let the train wreck happen.
