SPECIAL REPORT: THE KIDNAP AND CONTINUOUS DISAPPEARANCE OF ASUU MEMBER, DR. MRS MERCY MOKOBIA FOR OVER 7MONTHS SPECIAL REPORT, THE KIDNAP AND DISAPPEARANCE OF ASUU MEMBER Dr. Mrs. Mercy Mokobia, a lecturer in Science Education Department of Delta State University, Abraka was yanked off her husband’s bosom in their bedroom and abducted between 12 midnight and 1am on Tuesday 9th April, 2013 from their home at Obiaruku, Delta State. Family sources reveal that the Delta state police command after some weeks tracked down the kidnappers to their hideout, caught some suspects while some escaped including the kingpin. Weeks later, the kingpin was caught who later mentioned names of the other kidnappers and accessories to the crime. Some of the notable accessories are one Mr. Murray, the head of Vigilante Groups in Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta, and one Pastor Okolocha of Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries in Umutu Ukwuani LGA. A family member lamented: “as I speak, the Delta State Police command has not achieved any result with regards to the whereabouts of our mother (the lecturer), dead or alive. Dead; where buried? Alive; where she is held hostage? We hear that the last detainee in connection with the kidnap, the Pastor has been freed since September 2013.” It is also important to mention that the DELSU branch of ASUU was on the verge of embarking on an indefinite strike in April when the Commissioner of Police Delta State, Mr. Ikechukwu Aduba came to the campus and gave hopes of the recovery of the kidnapped lecturer. On the 11th of October, 2013, the Nigerian Tribune reported that the CP Delta State disclosed that although the police had some of the suspects connected to the crime in their kitties, the hoodlums had refused to confess where the woman is in spite of all efforts being made by the police to make them speak. He then arrogantly blurted that “the police are not magicians”. So the CP’s message to a grieving husband, children and in-laws and grandchildren is that they are not magicians hence the arrested kidnappers cannot be interrogated and prosecuted? He is declaring that an institution like the Police Force with all the resources at its disposal in terms of Intelligence coupled with confessional statements of the kidnappers does not have what it takes to secure the release of the Dr. Mrs. Mercy Mokobia? While Delta State Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan berated the CP Delta State for his inhuman remark especially when the police boss is being paid from the taxpayers’ money in order to protect lives and property, the family of Dr. Mrs. Mercy Mokobia wants an immediate end to this terrible nightmare Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Delta State, Dr. Emmanuel Mordi revealed to Vanguard on the 29th of August, 2013 that in the past two years over 20 lecturers of DELSU have been kidnapped. I wish to bring the attention of all well-meaning Nigerians especially of student/youth extraction that unless we collectively demand for justice our educational system may never recover. The trauma of the family is beyond words and I urge the Inspector General of Police and President Goodluck Jonathan to urgently intervene in this unfortunate and pathetic circumstance. The CP Delta State needs to urgently explain to Nigerian students, lecturers and indeed the entire nation where the arrested kidnappers are, whether they have been prosecuted and the whereabouts of Dr. Mrs. Mercy Mokobia because this matter will not be swept under the carpet. A family member disclosed that they are currently consulting on what he described as major steps if their mother is not released because for some months now, there has been no communication between the family of Dr. Mrs. Mercy Mokobia and the Police, not even when the last detainee was released from police custody he lamented. May GOD save Dr. Mrs. Mercy Mokobia from the hands of these evil people and unite her with her family again.
