SPECTACLE In a world of consumerism and mass media, Facebook has become a spectacle on the Internet. Users consume Facebook nearly everyday and spend hours and hours on it. GuyErnest Debord states, “The spectacle is not a collection of images, but a social relation among people, mediated by images.” People on Facebook scroll through their news feeds, ‘liking,’ others’ posts creating this social relation between users. Facebook has created a mass media medium containing an ecosystem of cultures that combine into one that creates a cultural homogenization. Because Facebook is a form of mass media, it allows the spread of commodity-images that can get people excited about a product. Marketing in the spectacle causes degradation of knowledge and critical thought according to Debord. There is clear evidence that Facebook has created this kind of result. People often read posts and look at images and quickly believe and accept what they see without skepticism.
