Spencer was picked on a national casting call for the early 50s sitcom Amos N Andy for CBS. This was so far beneath his talent and abilities that it goes without saying--he finally got paid, though. Whatever you may feel about Amos N Andy it pays to remember that Redd Foxx loved it and thought it should not become another victim of the Witch Hunt for Black Stereotyping which had by then become so much a part of Americana. Perhaps if the show had not been part of a Radio Series staring White Actors it might have survived. It was a preview of much of the Black Humor of the 70s which followed. I found it very funny--but yes, it was, unfortunately not the right time...
