SPPEEx Networking Nights: Debrief on Session 4: Meet other engineers in the industry and build your network! Teokotai Ruland‐Masters, Mechanical Engineer from AWT Water presented on the design of wastewater treatment plants and the latest in technology that is the Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) process. The traditional activated sludge process involves the treatment of sewerage using a combination of air and microorganisms such as bacteria. The MBR process uses ultra‐filtration and microorganisms in a bioreactor and has the added advantage of taking up less physical space. Teokotai spoke about his involvement in an upgrade project at the Wastewater Treatment Plant in Rotorua which looked to increase treatment output. MBR was retrofitted into the plant which achieved its objective as well impacting less on the footprint of the site. Stuart Mitchell, self‐employed Freelancing Computer Programming Consultant spoke about Novapay and the fundamental failings that led to the debacle. A very loose scope of works on a fixed price contract as well as no pilot scheme undertaken meant issues were inevitable from the get‐go. Although subject matter experts were employed to try help solve the issues, they didn’t have an understanding of the whole problem and therefore did not help. Lessons learnt from this disaster of a software implementation project is that old systems need to be replaced in good time, piece by piece and that a suitable pilot scheme and roll out be specified. A prime example of how fundamentals are crucial to a successful outcome which in the Novapay case was unfortunately overlooked.
