SPRUCE BEETLE ATTACKS Although the numbers of the mountain pine beetle appear to be on the decline, the growth rate of spruce beetle infestation on the Western Slope spiked last year. The 2013 aerial forest healthy survey conducted by the U.S. Forest Service and the Colorado State Forest Service showed the spruce beetle was active on 216,000 new acres, statewide. In 2012, the survey recorded 183,000 new acres of forest land affected by the beetle, bringing the two-year total to nearly 400,000 acres. -GJ Daily Sentinel, 01.31.14
