Português Work Community SRSG Santos Pais welcomes the enactment by President Dilma Rousseff of Law 13.010 which recognizes the right of the child to be cared for and educated without any form of corporal punishment or degrading treatment. The new law was enacted enters into force on 26 June 2014. The adoption of this new legislation marks an historic day for Brazilian children. It strengthens Brazils efforts to safeguard childrens rights and it gains a decisive global relevance as it increases the percentage of the world’s children protected by a legal ban against all forms of violence from 5% to 8%! highlighted the Special Representative. The new legal provisions protect the right of the child to grow up free from the use of physical punishment as a form of correction, discipline, education or any other pretext by parents, family members, legal guardians, and teachers or other caretakers. The Law No. 13.010 became known as the Boy Bernard Law, named after Bernardo Boldrini, 11, who was found dead in Rio Grande do Sul, whose major crime suspects are his father and stepmother. Law reform is a crucial priority in global efforts to prevent and eliminate violence against children and the legal protection from violence is gaining ground around the world, with other 38 countries having included a comprehensive prohibition in their national legislation.
