#SSU #NEWSUPDATE The corruption trial of Julius Malema, leader of the vehemently anti-graft Economic Freedom Fighters, gets underway in the Polokwane Magistrates Court on Tuesday. Malema faces charges of fraud, corruption, money-laundering, and racketeering. It is alleged that he made nearly R4m from corrupt activities. The EFF has been outspoken against corruption and has accused the ruling African National Congress of chronic kleptomania of public funds. On Monday EFF spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi said the party would call for President Jacob Zuma to face corruption charges and pay back public funds spent on upgrades to his homestead in Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal. -------------- United Nations - In a blistering speech to the United Nations, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned on Monday that Hamas and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) group are branches of the same poisonous tree, both bent on world domination through terror, just as the Nazis were. Netanyahu also lashed back at Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who accused Israel last week of carrying out war crimes and waging a war of genocide during the fighting in Gaza. Netanyahu said Hamas committed the real war crimes in Gaza by using Palestinian civilians as human shields. Addressing the UN General Assemblys annual ministerial meeting, the Israeli leader argued that Israels fight against Hamas and the US military campaign against ISIS are part of the same cause - the defeat of Islamic extremism. ----------- Cape Town – Zimbabwe is the only country that is leading in empowering and serving black peoples interests, President Robert Mugabe has reportedly said. Mugabe, 90, said Zimbabwe was now a lone ranger in the world because of its tough empowerment policies, which were against the British and American interests. According to the Daily News, Mugabe, who was speaking to his Zanu-PF party supporters, who welcomed him back from the 69th session of the United Nations general assembly in the US, said fearless Zimbabwe had succeeded in the fight against imperialists who come in different forms. Mugabe, who is known for blasting Western powers as protagonists of regime change in his country, said some African nations were seriously afraid of insulting Americans as they feared upsetting whites and losing aid. ------------ Washington - The rainy season in West Africa is compounding difficulties in getting supplies delivered and new treatment centres built as donors rush to isolate people infected with the deadly Ebola virus and stop its rapid spread, US officials said. Nancy Powell, newly appointed as the US State Departments envoy to co-ordinate its Ebola response, said the top priority is to isolate as many people as quickly as possible. But that faces significant logistical hurdles. Infrastructure challenges in the rainy season is one of the biggest difficulties. And you add the rain and getting materials out of the capital and it is very difficult, Powell said in a news briefing last week. The July to September rainy season is coming toward its end, but October is known for heavy thunderstorms that can drench the region and turn roads to mud.
