ST. CYRIL OF JERUSALEM ON THE FALSEHOOD OF THE CALVINIST - TopicsExpress

ST. CYRIL OF JERUSALEM ON THE FALSEHOOD OF THE CALVINIST "TULIP" [these statements of his run directly contrary to T, U, L, and I, of the famous "TULIP": i.e., total depravity, unconditional election, limited atonement, and irresistible grace. Even "P" (perseverance) is indirectly taken out, since U, L, and I presuppose an inability to fall away from the salvation that was decreed by God apart from human free will. I devote over 100 pages in my book, "Biblical Catholic Salvation" to dismantling TULIP piece-by-piece from Scripture.] The soul is immortal, and all souls are alike both of men and women; for only the members of the body are distinguished. There is not a class of souls sinning by nature, and a class of souls practising righteousness by nature: but both act from choice, the substance of their souls being of one kind only, and alike in all. . . . The soul is self-governed: and though the devil can suggest, he has not the power to compel against the will. He pictures to thee the thought of fornication: if thou wilt, thou acceptest it; if thou wilt not, thou rejectest. For if thou wert a fornicator by necessity, then for what cause did God prepare hell? If thou were a doer of righteousness by nature and not by will, wherefore did God prepare crowns of ineffable glory? (Fourth Catechetical Lecture, 20-21; NPNF2-7) And if He did not hinder Aaron, because of his offence, from entering upon the High Priesthood, will He hinder thee, who art come out from the Gentiles, from entering into salvation? Only, O man, repent thou also in like manner, and grace is not forbidden thee. (Second Catechetical Lecture, 10; NPNF2-7) . . . the Bridegroom invites all without distinction, because His grace is bounteous; . . . (Third Catechetical Lecture, 2; NPNF2-7)
