STAR REPORTS ON LAMU VIOLENCE: After a meticulous examination of the recordings of speeches at the Iftar dinner hosted by Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho and attended by CORD leaders Raila Odinga and Moses Wetangula among others over the weekend, we wish to clarify that Hon Raila Odinga did not utter words reported by the Star yesterday, July 16, 2014, under the headline LAND-GRABS BEHIND LAMU VIOLENCE, SAYS RAILA. While Mr Odinga called for the implementation of the Truth, Justice and Reconciliation report, he did not delve into its contents. The Star however went ahead to reproduce the contents of that report and attributed to Mr Odinga the committee’s recommendations on land related injustices in parts of the Coast. Mr Odinga finds the report in the Star consistent with its wild and unsubstantiated reporting in recent months, particularly on CORD that aims to promote the governing coalition. Such recent headlines include Four ODM Governors Oppose Raila’s Referendum Call (July 12, 2014) which quoted no single governor, How Uhuru Neutralised Raila Over Saba Saba (July 9, 2014), which had nothing new and Uhuru to Have Private Dinner With Obama (July 5, 2014), which has been disowned by the Department of State. Mr Odinga would have ignored the Star story on Lamu as he has done with the others were it not for its capacity to foment more trouble in an already disturbed and fragile area.
