START OF SWITCHING LOYALTIES DEMOCRACY- Political science students will tell you that despite the fact we have so many nincompoops in both houses of congress, hoodlums in robes and power hungry bureaucrats from the palace to the lowest government agency, we still enjoy a well functioning democracy. It only illustrates our resiliency as a people. But what cannot be tolerated is when an elected president wanted to stay beyond the mandate given by the electorates, such in the case of Ferdinand Marcos. Even Fidel V. Ramos and Gloria Macapagal Arroyo advanced ideas of amending the constitution, in the hope that not only economic provisions will be amended but political too, including the lifting of term limit. The Malacanang geniuses, possibly wanted to cling to power floated the baloon for a term extension, and what do they get? Flak from all directions. PNOY ADMINISTRATION- When President Benigno Simeon Aquino III aka Noynoy will step down from his presidential seat and spend his last hour in Malacanang, he would start to know his real friends. Hopefully he wont be prosecuted by the same people whom he appointed, just like what happened to President Arroyo. Do you remember that Butch Abad was appointed education secretary, Cesar Purisima was her Finance secrtary, Leila De Lima was with human rights commission, Dinky Soliman was with social welfare and many others who enjoyed power and perks during GMAs time at the palace. It might be particularly interesting who among in the administration now who are thinking of switching loyalties now that Pnoy is heading towards becoming a lameduck president. SWITCHING LOYALTIES- There is no need for a clean razor blade to cut loyalties to the previous dispenser of favors when it comes to congressmen and senators of this republic. It is the usual hidden pork barrel that can buy loyalty. As of this moment, it is only Vice President Jejomar Binay who is in the radar. Secretary Mar Roxas, despite his many gimmicks cant seem to make a beachead. He married broadcaster Korina Sanchez, with the thought of getting more popular through her, in same manner that Kiko Pangilinan and Ralph Recto got their coveted senate seats through their wives, Sharon Cuneta and Vilma Santos respectively. Sorry he failed. My source at the coconut palace ( official residence of the VP) is telling me that several Malacanang functionaries, many underscretaries of different department agencies and agency bosses would want nothing more than an dinner invitation with the Binays. PALACE CONNECTION- Of course connection to the president matters for many people. So at this early, they are trying to develop relationship whom they perceived will be the next Malacanang tenant. If someone is blessed with favor by the president, he may not be appointed any position in government, but there are reserved seats for him in the corporate rooms of top corporations. The tycoons dont show their faces in Malacanang when they curry favors, but their man who walks in the corridors of power and has the ears of the president does. Such is life. Winners, losers and survivors. -30-
