STARVING AMERICANS Millions of Americans with money in the bank are starving. While Americans spend more than 110 billion dollars annually for food, much of it is merely "empty calories." Dr. Jean Mayer observes, "Your body needs a certain amount of vitamins A, C, D, and iron per pound of body weight regardless of how much food you take in." Most of the food advertised is "exotic food" with little nutritional value. What is true in the physical is also true in the spiritual. Isaiah long ago asked: Why do you spend money for what is not bread, And your wages for what does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, And let your soul delight itself in abundance (Isaiah 55:2). In our modern age, we feed our spirits and minds much "food," but very little of it is spiritually nutritional. Television, the Internet, radio, newspapers, and books offer us all sorts of mental food, but most of it is "empty calories" and will starve us to death. Amos foretold: "Behold, the days are coming," says the Lord GOD, "That I will send a famine on the land, Not a famine of bread, Nor a thirst for water, But of hearing the words of the LORD" (8:11). We have lived to see that spiritual starvation. May believers everywhere vow to feed on that which is spiritually and morally uplifting.
