STATEMENT FROM WV SENATOR JOE MANCHIN REGARDING HIS VOTE AGAINST ADEGBILE NOMINATION “I voted against Mr. Adegbile’s nomination because I agree with your concerns about his past. Like you, I am greatly troubled by his decision to represent Mumia Abu-Jamal, a radical who was convicted of murdering Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner. After speaking with fellow police officers, concerned citizens and, most importantly, Officer Faulkner’s wife, Maureen, my conscience dictated that I oppose Mr. Adegbile’s nomination. Mr. Adegbile’s willingness to work on the Supreme Court brief of this unrepentant cop-killer seriously questions his ability to head a division at the Department of Justice that will litigate civil rights and Voting Rights Act cases. We all agree it is essential that the head of this division have a strong relationship with our law enforcement community, and Mr. Adebile’s past record casts doubt on his ability to be an effective leader. For those reasons, on March 5, 2014, I joined a majority of my colleagues in voting against Mr. Adegbile’s nomination to be the Assistant Attorney General for the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division, and, subsequently, his nomination failed by a 47-52 vote. Again, my vote was one of conscience. While Mr. Adegbile has the right to take any case, his decision to represent this convicted murderer of a police officer makes him unable to succeed in a high-level national position that deals with law enforcement.”
