STATEMENT ON SC PIO BAN ON LIVE MEDIA COVERAGE REF: JOEL SY EGCO 09164312255 The National Press Club of the Philippines is outraged by the new SC PIO policy against live media coverage, a fundamental element in the practice of journalism under the constitutionally guaranteed freedom of the press, which the Supreme Court and other pillars of democracy are bound to uphold. The policy comes at a time when the country helplessly grapples for a long-ignored Freedom of Information measure to further promote transparency and openness in all government undertakings, the High Court included. The policy sends a dangerous signal that freedom of information has no place in the august halls of the court. It sets a dangerous and shrewd precedent that subordinate offices might adopt. It reeks of prior censorship. Let the SC PIO under Theodore Te be reminded that the SC public information office, like any other government instrumentality, is a public trust. Thus, it is presumed to serve with the highest standards of accountability, responsibility and integrity.
