STATEMENT ON THE COURT DECISION REGARDING FILING OF NOMINATIONS BY DORA SILIYA AND MAXWELL MWALE We stand fully behind the judiciary regarding the impartial manner in which it has discharged its responsibilities in the adjudication of the court process over the disputed nominations of Ms. Dora Siliya and Mr. Maxwell Mwale in the Petauke Central and Malambo constituencies. As NAREP we had already gone on record to express our concern at the attempt to prevent these individuals from re-contesting their seats when the republican constitution clearly protects their right to do so. This has been wrongly presented as a fight against corruption when in reality it has been nothing other than the PF adopting a sore loser mentality. We sincerely hope that the PF will start to appreciate that their tactics of hoodwinking the public have begun to show themselves for what they really are. We accept that corruption is a serious problem in our politics and needs to be tackled aggressively starting with any corruption within the current administration. The fight against corruption should not be undertaken selectively to advance the interests of a governing administration but to ensure that scarce national resources are properly accounted for. STATEMENT ON CALLS WITHIN PF FOR THE ADOPTION OF PRESIDENT SATA AS THEIR PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE FOR 2016 We are deeply troubled and concerned by the violence that has engulfed the PF following the jostling for power by factions within its ranks. The main concern centres on the effect that such public confrontations by members of the ruling Party create unnecessary tension and a climate of intimidation for peace-loving Zambians. It was clear from last weekend’s events in which public and private property was damaged, that the police appear more powerless than ever to arrest the lawlessness that was perpetrated by people acting in the name of PF. In true Animal Farm style, the cadres marching on behalf of their Party are allowed to demonstrate without permits and ransack public and private property while any members of the Opposition that seek to hold even private meetings are subjected to harassment and intimidation by PF cohorts with no assistance from the lawfully established authorities. In order to preserve their status quo, certain factions within PF are now calling for the adoption of President Michael Sata as their 2016 candidate. Such calls are not only unpatriotic, they are insensitive and irresponsible. It is clear that President Sata’s health is not at its best. This combined with his age and the pressure of high office makes it completely shocking that those within his own Party would want him to continue to preside over the complex affairs of a nation such as ours when clearly the task at hand requires a much more energetic set of hands to take over. Leading Zambia is not a 3-day a week, mornings-only, daily medical check-ups type of job. It requires 24 hour vigilance, energetic thinking and determination. If the PF really care for Mr. Sata’s health, they will desist from pretending it is in Zambia’s best interest for him to campaign again for the presidency in 2016 and perhaps accept that it is their own self-serving purposes that they are promoting his candidature.
