STEEL MAGNOLIAS BLOOM AT THE PLAYHOUSE Arguably the most popular play turned movie, this heartwarming story has become loved throughout the world. Steel Magnolias will be performed for the first time at the Playhouse in Somerset West as presented by the Hottentots-Holland Dramatic Society. The original play described the experience of the family and friends of the play author Harling following the 1985 death of his sister from diabetic complications after the birth of his namesake nephew and failure of a family member donated kidney. A writer friend continuously encouraged him to write it down in order to come to terms with the experience. He did but originally as a short story for his nephew the latter to get an understanding of the deceased mother. It eventually evolved in ten days to the play. Shelby’s wedding day nears, so the beauty shop ladies of Chinquapin Parrish, Louisiana - delicate as magnolias but tough as steel – have a lot to talk about. From the new assistant who announces, “I promise that my personal tragedy will not interfere with my ability to do good hair”, to the town matron who declares, “Im not crazy…Ive just been in a very bad mood 40 years!”… Steel Magnolias is alternately hilarious and touching, sure to be the feel-good hit of the season! Award winning actresses Roxy Lombard (Shelby), Samantha Taylor (Truvy), Trish Lombard (Ousier) and Elizabeth James (Clairee) are joined by newcomers Jo-Mari Pypers (Anelle) and Helen Morgan (M’lynn) in this completely local cast. The women have gone to great lengths to research the era and situations that bring this story to life. Directed by Darryl Spijkers (Annie, To Kill a Mockingbird, Shirley Valentine, A Streetcar Named Desire and more), this show promises to be energised with his flair for the aesthetic and emotionally captivating. Noel Pitout on costumes, Zanodean Cassiem on set and Ramsay Lotter on lights complete an award winning team as the cast and crew prepares to perform this moving piece about the human spirit. Book tickets through Computicket for the shows performed at 8pm on 13, 14, 20 February, 2.30pm on 15 February and 6.30pm on 21 February.
