STEM HIGHLIGHTS! Innovation in Education - Education for Innovation GREEN EDUCATION CENTER • The first GEC worldwide operated by a High School is almost ready to commence, promoting a true Green initiative not only within Anatolia College but will include students from public schools in the area. Students will attend lectures on green issues (mostly on Green Chemistry) and will participate in a wide range of hands-on activities. The Center collaborates with the Hellenic Green Chemistry Network and the Green Chemistry Center “Beyond Benign” in Willmington, MA (USA). During the last four years the Anatolia GEC has run a dynamic series of Greening events through Weekend student and family Programs, Summer Science Programs, the Go-Green Club, Green Projects, and Educational Trips to the model Green City of Freiburg in Germany. Many resulting Greening science papers have been presented in international conferences, further enhancing our reputation in this exciting new field. WEEKEND PROGRAMS (duration: 10-30 h each) • Pre-Engineering Program - the first of its kind organized in Greece. Greek and US university professors introduce theories then lead students in exciting hands-on projects. Students are introduced to Engineering Design and open solution problems. The Program has been selected among the most innovative educational efforts worldwide and, after peer review, will be included in the book “Innovations 2014”, to be published in the USA this year. Anatolia College Center for STEM Education has been invited to organize a Pre-Engineering Program in Moldova this summer. • Biotechnology Seminar (in collaboration with the University of New Hampshire) and Nanotechnology Seminar (in collaboration with LTFN Center) introduce students to two cutting edge science issues. • Renewable Energy Sources Program: Anatolia College students were the first in Greece to become familiar with recent advances in the field. • CSI & Forensic Science Programs (Introductory & Advanced levels) always capture students’ interest and are a great tool for boosting students’ observation skills, creativity, and critical thinking. • Partnerships with Universities both in the US and Greece provide Anatolia College students unique learning opportunities in contemporary science and engineering fields through internships and mentorships. CLUBS • The synthetic Biology iGEM Club (organized by MIT) is in its 3rd year and Anatolia College is one of the 5 European schools participating in this year’s jamboree. • The popular Anatolia Go-Green Club has a long and distinguished tradition of promoting environmental awareness. Students work in groups on various projects, such as the construction of a SEGWAY and the extraction of healing herbs traditional in Greece. • STEM Club aims at the familiarization of young students with STEM concepts. This year 35 students enjoyed activities combining Science, Engineering, Technology, & Math. • Astronomy Club • Biology Club • Biomass Club • Ecology Club EDUCATIONAL TRIPS • Annual trip to Boston. Every year a number of Anatolia students participate in Science, Engineering, and Green Activities in Boston Museum of Science, the MIT Media Lab, Northeastern University, the Green Chemistry Center “Beyond Benign,” and the Boston Waste Water Treatment in Deer Island. • A trip to Amsterdam, the “smart-city” of Europe was organized this year (36 participants). • Annual trip to Freiburg in Germany. Organized every year as the city serves as a model of a green initiative application. • On our first Green trip to Munich 43 fourth formers visited the Deutsches Museum along with visits to cultural sites. OTHER ACTIVITIES • STEM Family Days were organized for both Gymnasium and Kindergarten over the last 2 years with more than 200 parents and students participating each year. • The Summer Science Program (ages: 13-17): a 2-week program in sciences including topics as: Nanotechnology, Greening in our lives, Robotics, Engineering, CSI-Forensics & Biology. • STEM every year organizes the science component of the School’s Rainbow Summer Camp (Pre-K to 6th grade). • Most STEM activities have been documented as papers in International Conferences held both in Greece and abroad. • Anatolia College students have been distinguished by participating in many related activities and competitions such as: F1 in Schools, School Lab, World Robot Olympiad, First Lego League etc. • STEMnet was introduced this year. It is a network where the participation of students in STEM activities is recorded and evaluated. Those who excel are promoted into STEM Scholars (Club and Program Assistants).
