STOP SPEC WORK! Graphic Designers of Canada are asking for support of their petition to stop a most recent design competition asking students to submit spec work for a brand identity for a national event. Please take a moment and sign with us! These kinds of competitions using recognition as bait to solicit free work needs to stop. You never see these kinds of contests happening for other professions such as legal or accounting, so why should our profession be of lesser value. The time, effort, skill and talent required for our profession is something honed over years of experience and craft and should not be considered as something that anyone could do or of so little value that it should be for free. Especially if it is an organization with a substantial budget asking for free work. There should always be funds budgeted for creative work as thats what helps to drive the branded visuals for all future marketing. The people that submit to these requests all need to stop and consider wether or not they would as for free work from other professionals in other fields or respect their value.
