STRENGTHENING THE ECONOMY A few weeks ago, I posted a new years message in which I proposed certain programs that I believe will help us sustain and expand the current focus of Gov. Akpabios administration in Infrastructure into other important obligations of government such as Education, Healthcare, Jobs creation, industrialization and security. I see that task as the starting point for any governorship aspirant. We must focus on the issues now and present our ideas on how to grow the economy and how to sustain such growth. How do we intend to create jobs for our teaming youths, our proposals for the welfare of our elderly, the education of our children and the security of our lives and property. Such activity and effort must occupy our time and energy during the next few months of the campaign. The Akwa Ibom people demand this of us aspirants. It was on the basis of this expectation that I proposed the following policies and programs. Policies that I intend to follow through with as Governor of Akwa Ibom. I will appreciate your inputs, as I strongly believe that development policies must be built from the ground up. That is to say that, my development policies, programs and budget as Governor will emanate from the people . While we are gratified with the achievements of the current administration, as it were with previous administrations--I believe the Akwa Ibom people expect the next administration to grow and expand on the current achievements. There are still too many unemployed looking for the blessings of prosperity- As those who leave our schools and farms demand new jobs, automation takes old jobs away. To expand our growth and job opportunities, I urge you the people to please consider and react to these three measures: (1) First, the Manpower Training and Development Act I proposed is designed to stop the waste of able-bodied men and women who want to work, but whose only skill has been replaced by a machine and advances in technology. (2) Second, the Youth Employment Opportunities Act will be designed to help train and place not only the thousands of young Akwa Ibom citizens who are both out of school and out of work, but the thousands of young Akwa Ibom citizens entering the labor market in this decade; and; (3) Third, the tax credit for investment in labor, machinery and equipment, which, combined with planned revisions of depreciation allowances, will spur our modernization, our growth, and our ability to compete abroad. Please share your ideas and suggestions on these proposed policies. This will help me fine tune the proposed programs to reflect to some extent the desire of the people, the desired beneficiaries of the policies. Thank you.
