STRUGGLE FOR ADADA STATE CREATION CONTINUES The people of Nsukka , weekend, declared that they won’t be deterred in their genuine quest for the creation of Adada State out of the present Enugu State despite obstacles deliberately placed on their path. A statement issued in Enugu by Chief Nnanwike Nwodo, said it had become obvious that some enemies of the struggle have resorted to the below-the-belt tactics to scuttle the agitation. Nwodo further explained that from all account, the detractors, perhaps have interest in another state agitation in South-east which unfortunately could not meet constitutional requirements unlike the request for Adada State. Nwodo said it has been established that, unlike the impression being created in the minds of the public that no agitation for new state met the constitutional requirement, the proposed Adada State has met all requirements. “The request for the creation of Adada State not only met the full constitutional provisions in this regard but remained the most consistent and the oldest agitation,” he noted. He disclosed that recent press publications and their testimonies before the Senate Committee on Constitutional Amendment, the combination of the Enugu State Actualisation Committee and Movement for the Creation of Adada State, copiously supplied data and records to establish that their submissions were current and updated. Nwodo contended that if there were other reasons to be adduced as to why state creation is put on hold again, “ that is welcome but certainly not on inability of agitations to meet constitutional stipulations on state creation.” According to him, “South-east of Nigeria is continually marginalised in representation, infrastructure development, fiscal allocation etc, and there seems no end in sight in redressing the obvious imbalance. Nothing soothes the nerves as the statement made by the Senator representing Enugu North Senatorial Zone, Senator Ayogu Eze, elucidating that the committee had erroneously worked with an outdated documents of Adada State Movement, whereas updated documents of 2013 were available with the committee.” The statement emphasised that “we stand by our son, the Senator representing the geographical area agitating for the creation of Adada State. We also align with Senator Ayogu’s standpoint on the issue of regularizing signatories of legislators who were not returned to the legislature. “We consider the creation of new states as a highly sensitive national assignment and those opportuned to deal with it must do so with utmost sense of responsibility to remove any traces of biases. “We emphasise for the umpteenth time that our request dates back to 1982/83, when Nsukka people submitted their first Memorandum for the creation of Adada State to the second Republic Senate under Dr. Joseph Wayas as the Senate president. The Nsukka people since then have maintained unrelenting efforts in showcasing their potentials and endowments which ably qualify them for their state. “It will be recalled that the South East Caucus of the National Assembly in 2005 voted Adada State as the first State to be created from the zone. “We remain grateful to the Governor of Enugu State, Barr. Sullivan Chime, for his unalloyed support for the creation of Adada. “The proposed Adada State boasts of huge hydrocarbon deposits of oil and gas in Uzo-Uwani LGA, Eha-Ndiagu (Nsukka LGA), Etteh in Igbo-Eze North LGA and Isi-Uzo LGA. We have as well in this zone large expanse of immensely fertile land for Agriculture and so the proposed state has what it takes to sustain itself economically. “The proposed Adada state has a large, vivacious and highly educated population with the location of the famous University of Nigeria at the heart of the proposed State. The people of the area rank among the most homogeneous in the country and the environment and culture among the most attractive in Nigeria too.”
